McShane & Brady Investigating Baylor Genetics Data Breach

Baylor Genetics, a Houston-based genetic testing laboratory, has announced a cybersecurity incident in which an unauthorized third party accessed its network and to sensitive personal information belonging to patients and employees. This breach has now affected over 2.8 million people, according to a filing with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services.
An investigation was conducted and found that an unauthorized third party “accessed certain portions of our network, and certain data stored on our network, between June 11 and June 17.”, according to a release from the company.
Information potentially disclosed included date of birth, medical testing information, lab test results, and potentially health insurance information, as well as Social Security numbers. For employees, the exposed data may include personal identifying information such as Social Security numbers, government-issued identification numbers, and financial account information.
Please be aware that some patients may also receive a breach notice without immediately recognizing the Baylor Genetics name. In its breach notice, Baylor Genetics said it works with third-party medical providers and may perform testing directly or on behalf of other laboratories.
