Blue Shield of California Data Breach: 4.7 million affected

McShane & Brady, a Kansas City law firm representing individuals whose personal and private information has been breached by unauthorized access, is investigating a data breach from Blue Shield of California.

The health insurance plan provider Blue Shield of California disclosed a web tracking-related privacy breach involving user data being shared with Google’s advertising product, Google Ads.

Blue Shield announced April 9 that the personal information of some of its patients was shared with Google Ads between April 2021 and January 2024.

The breach was recently reported to the HHS’ Office for Civil Rights (OCR) as affecting up to 4.7 million.

Blue Shield member information that may have been compromised include insurance plan name, type, and group number, city and zip code, gender, family size, Blue Shield assigned identifiers for online accounts, medical claim service date and provider, patient name, and patient financials.

According to the notice,  no additional personal data such as Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, and banking and credit card information were disclosed.

From hospitals, healthcare providers, government services, service providers to insurance companies, proper precautions and training have not been made to secure these records. Once public, your information is out there for everyone to see.  McShane & Brady is the leading firm representing those who have been affected by a data breach.
