Swimming Pool Safety Tips for Summer

Summer in Kansas City means backyard barbecues, neighborhood pool parties, and long afternoons spent in the water. But while swimming pools can be a great source of fun and exercise, they can also become the scene of a devastating accident in a matter of seconds.

At McShane & Brady, we represent individuals and families after serious injuries caused by negligence. Swimming pool accidents are often preventable, and when a property owner, pool operator, or business fails to take reasonable safety precautions, the consequences can be catastrophic.

Drowning remains one of the leading causes of accidental death for young children in the United States. Non-fatal drowning incidents can also lead to permanent brain injuries, neurological damage, and long-term medical complications.

What makes pool accidents especially dangerous is how quickly they happen. A child can slip into the water silently, without splashing or calling for help. In many cases, adults are nearby but do not realize what is happening until it is too late.

Whether you own a pool or are visiting one this summer, these safety measures can make a real difference:

Always have an adult supervising

When children are swimming, designate one adult whose only job is to watch the water. No phone, no reading, no distractions. Rotate the role if needed, but make sure someone is always actively supervising.

Teach Children Water Safety Early

Formal swim lessons can reduce the risk of drowning, but swim lessons do not replace supervision. Children should also be taught simple pool rules, such as no running, no pushing, and no swimming without an adult present.

Keep Rescue Equipment Nearby

Every home pool should have a life ring or a floatation device and a first aid kit at the ready in case these need to be used in an emergency.

Learn CPR

If a drowning incident occurs, immediate action can save a life and reduce the risk of permanent injury. Parents, grandparents, babysitters, and pool owners should strongly consider CPR training.

Keep Children Away from Drains

Children should be taught not to play near drains or suction outlets. If a drain cover is loose, cracked, broken, or missing, no one should use the pool until it is repaired.

Do Not Rely on Floaties

Inflatable arm bands, pool noodles, and other toys are not substitutes for supervision or approved life-saving equipment. They can create a false sense of security and should never be relied on to keep a child safe.
