Rideshare Accidents On The Increase

The popularity of rideshare services has grown exponentially over the past few years.  While many use User and Lyft as primary modes of transportation, those of us who have cars use rideshare services for simple convenience.   According to Forbes magazine, the number of annual Uber trips has gone from 140 million in 2014 to 6.9 billion in 2019.

Of course, with the increase in ridership comes increases in the accidents.  The University of Chicago conducted a study and it indicted that rideshare services such as Uber and Lyft had led to a 3% increase in overall car accident fatalities.    It also found that nearly 1,000 daily car accidents deaths are due to the increasing number of rideshare vehicles on the roads.  Uber vehicles were involved in 97 fatal crashes between 2017 and 2018.  21% of those crash victims were riders.  21% were drivers and the remaining 58% were third party drivers or passengers.
