McShane & Brady, LLC is investigating a data breach involving Instructure, Inc., the company behind the widely used educational platform Canvas.

Canvas is cloud-based Learning Management System that acts as a digital hub for students to access course materials, submit assignments, view grades, and communicate with instructors.  It is used by approximately 38% of K-12 students and nearly half of all colleges and universities.

According to reports, the threat actor known as “ShinyHunters” claimed responsibility for breaching Instructure’s systems and obtaining records containing sensitive student and teacher information. Instructure has stated that the compromised data may include:

• Names
• Email addresses
• Student identification numbers
• Messages exchanged through the platform

In addition to Canvas, Instructure operates several other educational platforms and services, including:

• Mastery
• Parchment
• Impact
• LearnPlatform
• Credentials
• Catalog
• Studio
