Blog: Essential Tips for Swimming Pool Water Safety

With temperatures on the rise and keeping kids active (and off their electronics for a period of time) during their summer break from school, the pool is an ideal place for fun with friends and family. Whether it be a backyard pool or a community pool, we’ve put this handy tip guide together to make sure that you and your loved ones stay safe while swimming.
Always have an adult supervising when children are in or near the pool. This adult should be undistracted and focused on the children. Lifeguards have to watch a lot of swimmers at the same time. Having an adult supervising provides an extra layer of safety.
Make sure that everyone, especially children, understands the importance of walking, not running around the pool, to prevent slips and falls. Pools and their surrounding areas can become wet, and coupled with people not paying attention, it can be an accident waiting to happen.

Know how to swim. The significance of swimming lessons goes beyond just strokes and kicks. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, drowning is the leading cause of death for children 1 to 4 years old. It can happen in seconds and is often silent. It’s never too late to learn how to swim. Many swim classes are designed for adults.
If you are swimming at a public pool, make sure that lifeguards are on duty. Never swim in a public pool without lifeguard supervision.
Learn CPR. The American Red Cross offers CPR training.
No Diving in shallow water. Diving headfirst into shallow water can cause the head and neck to collide with the bottom, leading to fractures and spinal cord damage.
We hope these tips will help keep you and your family safe in and around the pool!
