Kansas City Car Accident Deaths on the Rise

At McShane & Brady, we are deeply concerned about the alarming trend of the rising number of Kansas City car accident deaths. Over the past few years, statistics have painted a troubling picture of escalating danger on our roads. According to data from the Kansas City Police Department (KCPD) and the Missouri State Highway Patrol (MSHP) , the number of car accident fatalities has been steadily increasing. We believe that staying informed and aware about the dangers that we all face on a regular basis while driving in our city, is a crucial first step in remaining safe and reducing danger when behind the wheel.

Kansas City Car Accident Deaths 2020-2023

According to annual crash data released by the KCPD and the MSHP, the number of traffic accidents resulting in death has been climbing significantly. In 2023, Kansas City witnessed 102 fatalities stemming from car accidents. This marked a notable increase from the 90 fatalities in 2022, 85 in 2021, and 78 in 2020.

Kansas City Ranked In Top 10 Deadliest For Car Accidents

In Forbes Advisor’s October 2023 article, “The Cities Where You’re Most Likely to Get in a Car Accident”,  troubling statistics surfaced regarding Kansas City’s road safety. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration revealed that Kansas City ranked among the top 10 cities with the highest number of fatal car accidents. Kansas City was listed as seventh on the list of cities with the highest number of traffic deaths, with a reported 18 traffic fatalities per 100,000 population.

Accident Prone Areas in Kansas City

Analyzing the data further, we can identify certain areas within Kansas City where the most accidents tend to occur. High-traffic zones such as Interstate 435, Interstate 70, and Highway 71 have consistently seen a higher frequency of accidents. Additionally, intersections such as Wornall Road and 95th Street, Blue Parkway and Swope Parkway, and Gregory Boulevard and Troost Avenue are notorious for their accident-prone nature.

Additionally, it’s important to be aware of some accident prone intersections throughout the city. In late 2022, Fox 4 KC News published the list of intersections that according to the KCPD, had the highest number of accidents in the months prior. These were as follows:

  • 71 Highway & Gregory
  • 71 Highway & 55th St.
  • 71 Highway & 59th St.
  • 75th St. & Ward Pkwy
  • Independence Ave. & VanBrunt
  • 39th St. & Southwest Trafficway
  • I-35 & Independence Ave.
  • I-670 & Grand Blvd.
  • I-670 & Broadway
  • 152 Highway & Shoal Creek Pkwy

Top Causes of Kansas City Car Accident Deaths

The reasons behind the increase in Kansas City car accident deaths are multifaceted. Distracted driving, speeding, driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and reckless behavior are all contributing factors. Additionally, failure to wear seatbelts is often cited in post-crash analysis by law enforcement. Furthermore, the growing population and urban development in Kansas City have led to heavier traffic congestion, increasing the likelihood of accidents.

Make Safety the Priority

As a personal injury law firm dedicated to serving the Kansas City community, McShane & Brady urges drivers to prioritize safety on the roads. Simple actions such as obeying traffic laws, avoiding distractions while driving, and never driving under the influence can make a significant difference in reducing accidents and saving lives.

Ultimately, preventing car accidents requires collective effort from individuals, communities, and government agencies. By working together and prioritizing safety, we can stem the tide of rising car accident fatalities in Kansas City and ensure that our roads are safer for everyone.
