Firework Safety Tips for a Safe Holiday

On the 4th of July, we celebrate our independence. Unfortunately due to careless actions, some will not have such an enjoyable day. An estimated 14,700 people were injured by fireworks last year. Most involve the hands and fingers, but one out of five are eye injuries.
With their dazzling display of vibrant colors and loud booms, fireworks are a sight to behold. There’s also an element of danger, including fires, explosions, and fireworks-related injuries. To truly enjoy fireworks safely, taking safety measures is a necessity.
- Read the instructions before lighting your fireworks to ensure you’re using them correctly.
- Light fireworks outside in a clear, open area away from other people and flammable materials. Children and pets should be kept far away from the area.
- Never place any part of your body directly over a fireworks device when lighting the fuse. Back up to a safe distance immediately after lighting fireworks.
- Never attempt to relight or pick up fireworks that have not fully ignited, as this can increase the risk of accidental injury or fire. Instead, wait until they have completely cooled down before discarding them properly.
- Have a bucket of water or a hose nearby in case of any accidental fires.
- If you do allow children to use sparklers, always have an adult supervise fireworks activities. Parents don’t realize that young children suffer injuries from sparklers. Sparklers burn at temperatures of about 2,000 degrees – hot enough to melt some metals.
- Make sure fireworks are legal in your area before buying or using them
- Never point or throw fireworks at another person.
